Vaginal Genital Warts

Genital warts are caused by sexually transmitted strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are over 100 different strains of HPV. Many of them cause warts on other parts of the body such as the hands and the feet (where they are the cause of verrucas).

Genital warts are distinct from those elsewhere on the body. The genital wart virus types are confined to the genital area and the non-genital types are not found on the genitals.

How Common Are Genital Warts?

Genital HPV is a very common infection. It is said that approximately 30 per cent of sexually active people will have had HPV infection at some time although the vast majority will never have had actual warts.

These people will be clear of the infection, without ever realizing that they had it, two to three years after catching it. As carriers of HPV during this time they may, however, be infectious and able to spread HPV to their partner(s).

What Are Vaginal Genital Warts Like?

The strains of genital wart viruses can be divided into two types: those that are benign and those that have been linked with cancer. The benign strains irritate the skin of the vulva, which responds by growing more than usual, forming little piles of skin (warts) containing a scattering of virus particles.

Genital warts appear rather like tiny, pale-pink growths on the vulva. The oncogenic strains (those thought to cause cancer) mainly affect the cervix and can cause cervical cancer; normally, the only sign of infection with this type is an abnormal cervical smear. The warts that you can see on your vulva are therefore not those that increase the risk of cancer.

The Genital wart virus gains entry through the minute cuts or splits in your skin that are often present; the main sites are the lower part towards the back of your vulva and around your anus. The virus then spreads widely through your genital skin, causing warts to pop up at random rather like mushrooms in a field.

Do Genital Warts Cause Problems?

Warts are a cosmetic problem. If they grow big and trap bacteria in their crevices, they may itch. As with any other sexually transmitted diseases they can also affect relationships. Their incubation period is long, up to several months, and if they arise anew in a fairly long-term partnership they may sow doubts and mistrust about fidelity.
